In 1830, Robert Paine became the first president of Methodist LaGrange College, located on Lawrence Hill, in what eventually became Colbert County after 1869.  He served as president of the college as well as a professor teaching a range of subjects, from moral science to geology from 1830 until 1846, when he was elected bishop of the Methodist church at the first General conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Petersburg, Virginia. During his time at LaGrange, Paine also served as minister of the historic First United Methodist Church in Tuscumbia. In 1842, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Wesleyan University (Ohio). He died in 1882 and is buried in Aberdeen, Mississippi.
