Abstract
I chose to write Alabama Postcards to give my reader a clear view of what different areas of Alabama are like, as well as the kinds of people you can find there, based on personal experiences throughout life. I also feel these essays serve as a memoir about my family and how they have helped shape me into who I am today, even those I never got to meet. I chose to use “postcards” in the title since I chose to write about different areas of Alabama, and aimed to give my reader a clear image of what these towns are like on a day-to-day basis.
There is a stigma that comes with being from Alabama. We’ve all heard jokes—we’re all uneducated rednecks that are married to our cousins. Having traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally, I can say that uneducated rednecks come in various forms and fashion and can be found practically anywhere. I wanted to showcase what Alabama is like through the lens of a lifelong Alabamian. Often, outsiders don’t look deep enough to see what Alabama truly has to offer.
