Dear Mr. Barnes:

I was glad to receive your letter about the discussion which have taken place, looking toward the establishment of a school of nursing at Florence State University. This is indeed fine and I certainly hope it will be possible for the Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital and Florence State University to go forward with the project.

As author of the Nurse Training Act of 1964, let me say that some 13 new schools of nursing are being constructed with assistance under the Act. A couple of weeks ago the Senate approved my Health Manpower Bill of 1968 which would continue for three years (through June 30, 1972) the program of grants to assist in the construction of new schools of nursing, and I hope and believe this legislation can be finally enacted before Congress adjourns. I am doing my best to this end.

The Nurse Training Act is administered by the US Public Health Service and at my request Miss Jessie Scott, Director of the Division of Nursing of the US Public Health Service is sending you detailed information about the construction grants program and the application procedures. After you have had an opportunity to study these, do not hesitate to call on me if I can be of further help in connection with the development of your application.

Please know that I deeply appreciate your kind and heart warming message regarding my services in the Congress and, in particular, my work through the years in behalf of better health for our people. I am grateful to you for your friendship and support.

With kindest personal regards and best wishes, I am

Very sincerely,

Lister Hill [signed]
