Description

Beginning in 1855, construction began on a three-story structure for the new college in Florence, Alabama. A Gothic Revival style and Castellated sub style structure of the mid-nineteenth century, Wesleyan Hall was constructed with local clay and built by enslaved labor under the supervision of Zebulon Pike Morrison. The structure has brick masonry on the exterior walls with wood-frame partitions that are plastered with wood and cast-iron floor frame. Beginning in 1856 it became Florence Wesleyan University and functioned as a Men's College at the beginning.
