Description

Beginning in 1957, members of the Florence Astronomy Society began building the largest telescope of any college or university in Alabama. The 14 to 14 1/2-inch Newtonian reflector telescope was given to Florence State College to use in the new Planetarium and Observatory. It cost the Astronomy Society $1,000 for actual materials and at the time, was appraised by experts at approximately $15,000.
