Tuscumbia, Alabama

Proclamation

WHEREAS, The UNA Lions Tony Dorsey. Darryl Hardy, Ricky Johnson, Eric Lacy, Darin Lilos, Kevin Simmons, Eric Smith, Robert Sorenson, Fred Stafford, Allen Williams, Carl Wilmer. Scott Cooper (red-shirt). Patrick Fairley (red shirt) under the supervision of Head Coach Gary Elliott. Assistant Coach Billy Gamble, Graduate Assistant Anthony Reid and Student Coach Gary Beals finished the season 29-4 overall and won the NCAA Division Il National Championship with a 79-72 win over Bridgeport.

WHEREAS, The 29-4 record was the best overall record and the most wins in school history. (42 years)

WHEREAS, UNA was the first school in the state to win a national basketball championship (1979) and is now the first to ever win two.

WHEREAS, UNA is also just the third school to ever win more than one Division II basketball championship since the tournament began in 1957.

WHEREAS, UNA's overall winning percentage in NCAA play (79.3) is the second best among any school to have ever appeared more than once.

WHEREAS, The 1990-91 Lions won their final nine games, with eight of those wins coming over teams that had won 20 games or more.

WHEREAS, Allen Williams and Carl Wilmer were named All-Gulf South Conference, and Williams, Wilmer and Fred Stafford were named to the All-Elite Eight Tournament squad in Springfield.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Raymond B. Cahoon, Mayor of Tuscumbia do hereby proclaim April 4, 1991 as UNA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP DAY.
