Description
The Model Training School was established by the Board of Directors as an auxiliary to the Normal School. In the 1889 Catalog, it states that "practice teaching does not include or is not confined to any one grade-it extends through several, including high school branches. The course of study at the Training School embraces all the branches usually taught in the public schools and leads to the work of the first year in the curriculum of the Normal College. The school serves as a preparatory department for the higher institution.
From 1885-1920, the Model Training School consisted of six grades, or the elementary department. In 1921, a model junior high school was organized for grades 7-9. The purpose was the development of the life motives of the pupils and the training of Junior High School teachers for the State of Alabama. By the 1925-1926 school year, a senior high school was deemed advisable for training. These senior high students must be local and those completing the approved courses of study of the senior high school would be awarded high school diplomas. The training school was fully accredited.
The Model Training School was renamed Kilby Training School in the early 1920s. It continues to educate students in grades one-six and is the only remaining laboratory school in the state of Alabama.
