Description

Dr. Henry J. Willingham was born in St. Clair County near the Coosa River in Alabama. He went to Howard College (East Lake, Alabama) and graduated in 1891. After graduation, he worked two years in the newspaper business in Memphis, Tennessee. He then moved back to Alabama and became president of Lineville College in Clay County in 1893. Seven years later, in 1900, he became head of public education at the State Agricultural School at Wetumpka, Alabama. He became secretary of the State Board of Teacher Examiners in Montgomery in 1907. He was then elected for a 4-year term as State Superintendent of Education but only served 3 of those years.
