Description

Dr. Ethelbert Brinkley Norton was appointed the sixteenth president of Florence State Teachers College in 1948. He served as president of Florence State Teachers College, Florence State College, and Florence State University from 1948-1972 when he retired after 24 years. He was named Brotherhood Week Chairman in 1963, Muscle Shoals Citizen of the Year in 1967, and became an honorary member for life of the American Association of School Administrators in January 1973. He received the Outstanding Civilian Service Award from the ROTC Department in May 1966. Four years after he retired, the University of North Alabama conferred the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (1976) for his service to public education. Dr. Norton passed away December 21, 1998, at 96 years old.
