These images show construction of Employee Housing and Support Facilities associated with the establishment of the United States Nitrate Plants No. 1 and No. 2 located in Sheffield, Alabama. Sheffield was chosen September 28, 1917, by President Woodrow Wilson to fulfil the need of production of nitrate supply by the United States under the National Defense Act of 1916. Construction on both plants began in late 1917 and within a year, both plants were nearing completion. Since the population was around 10,000 in the area, a massive influx of workers would be needed to satisfy the workforce. This called for a vast undertaking of building officer quarters, barracks, mess halls, tent communities, labor housing, and schools to accommodate this need.
