Description

Constructed in 1939 with the aid of the Federal Emergency Administration and directly supervised by the Public Works Administration, Powers Hall was built as a women's residence hall and apartment dormitory. Named for Dr. James K. Powers, chair of Mathematics at State Normal College as well as president of the university from 1887-1897 and then again in 1911 until his death in 1913. The dormitory would accommodate approximately 60 girls (four girls would occupy a suite of three rooms with electrical cooking and refrigerator equipment in each suite for light housekeeping). There was also a large social room and comfortable quarters for the social director on the first floor of the building.
