Proclamation
WHEREAS, the 1976-77 University of North Alabama Basketball Team has won third place in the Nation in the NCAA Division II Tournament; and
WHEREAS, this UNA Basketball Team in Gulf South Conference Co-Champions with 11 wins and 5 losses in the Conference, and
WHEREAS, this Basketball Team has set a Gulf South Conference record for having won more games in an overall season than any other team - 24 won, 7 lost; and
WHEREAS, UNA won 16 straight games in Flowers Hall this year, and
WHEREAS, Coach Bill Jones, who is from Lexington and a graduate of UNA, has proven to be an excellent coach with an outstanding record - in 3 years at UNA he has had 55 wins and 25 losses; at Flowers Hall this year, they won 16 and lost 0, and have lost only 3 games in Flowers Hall in 3 years; in just 3 years he has brought them to the Gulf South Conference Championship and placed third in the Nation in the NCAA Division II Tournament; and
WHEREAS, all of the basketball players have played with honor, and the following with special honors: Otis Boddie was named one of the five chosen for the National All Tournament Team, and finished among the top scorers in the Gulf South Conference with a 15.6 average; Freddie Copeland set a new Gulf South Conference Record for field goals with an average of .625, hitting 132 out of 211 shots; Richard Hartry, Jimmy Armstrong and Freddie Copeland were also top scoring players.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF FLORENCE, ALABAMA, that the Coaches and Players of the 1976-77 Basketball Team be congratulated for their outstanding achievements in basketball and for their contribution to the University of North Alabama and to the Community.
