Description

Septimus P. Rice was born in Virginia in 1832. He enrolled at LaGrange College in 1851, received his degree in 1853, and was offered a position as head of the Preparatory Department there at LaGrange. In 1854, he was appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics. He served as Superintendent of the Preparatory Department and as Professor of Mathematics at Florence Wesleyan University from 1855 until it closed due to the war. He and Dr. Robert A. Young, President of Florence Wesleyan University at the time continued to teach during the war years. He became president of State Normal School at Florence in 1872 and continued in this position until he retired in 1881. He then became principal of Deshler Female Institute in Tuscumbia in 1889. He died around the turn of the century and was buried at LaGrange, Tennessee.
