Description

Dr. Richard Henderson Rivers left his position as president of Centenary College in 1854 and filled the position of president as well as Chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy at LaGrange College. At the time, the citizens of Florence urged the Tennessee Conference to remove LaGrange College from Lawrence Hill and put it in Florence, and this was granted. In January 1855, Dr. Rivers and all the faculty, except one, moved with students to Florence. Rivers continued as the fourth president of what became Florence Wesleyan University (1856) until December 1861. He was appointed as president of the Female Department of the Centenary Institute at Summerville, Alabama that same month. He died June 21, 1894, and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
