Resolution issued by the Florence, Alabama Board of Commissioners in honor of the University of North Alabama Basketball team, coaches, and cheerleaders in commemoration of their accomplishments in the 1983-1984 season.

Transcript

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, with a fighting spirit and determination the University of North Alabama Basketball Team ended its 1983-84 season with a glorious 27-7 record; and

WHEREAS, the Lions established a school record with 27 wins, returning the Lions to a proud tradition of being a national leader in basketball; and

WHEREAS, the team advanced to the NCAA Division II Semifinals after winning the Gulf South Conference Championship, the Gulf South Conference Tournament crown, the South Region Championship, and the NCAA Quarter-finals; and

WHEREAS, the Lions played with a gallant team effort against Central Missouri State in the Semifinals; and

WHEREAS, they represented not only themselves and the University, but also the City of Florence and North Alabama with a high quality of sportsmanship and character; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Bill Jones, the Assistant Coach Gary Elliott, and the Graduate Assistant Mike Gallion are to be commended for their untiring efforts to encourage and instruct their team to perform to the utmost of their ability; and

WHEREAS, the UNA Lion Cheerleaders are also to be praised for their support and encouragement to the team and should be praised also for being chosen as the No. 1 Cheerleading Squad in Division II in the entire nation

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Florence, Alabama, that the UNA Basketball Team, Coach Bill Jones and his staff, and the Cheerleaders be congratulated for their outstanding achievements and we urge the citizens in this area to join with us in showing them how proud we are. They are champions in our hearts!

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be conveyed to the Basketball Team, Coach Bill Jones, and the Cheerleaders and that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Florence, Alabama, and that a copy be sent to the local newspaper.
