Description

Dr. James Knox Powers was born August 15, 1851, near Florence, Alabama. He began his college education at Florence Wesleyan University. While in school, he was an assistant tutor in the Preparatory Department. He graduated from Florence Wesleyan University in 1871 and then went on to pursue his master's degree at the University of Alabama, graduating in 1873. He became Professor and Chair of Mathematics at State Normal School at Florence in 1873 and held this position until 1897. In 1885, he was appointed Lauderdale County Superintendent of Education. Three years later, in 1888, Powers became the eleventh president of State Normal College. He served in this position for about 10 years before resigning.
